7 Signs You Are NOT Drinking Enough Water

Updated: May 7

Water makes up 60-70% of the human body and is needed to help maintain a healthy weight, flush toxins from the body and produce bodily fluids like saliva. Water also contributes to regular bowel function, optimal muscle performance, and clear, youthful-looking skin. However, failing to drink enough water can cause dehydration and adverse symptoms, including fatigue, headache, weakened immunity, and dry skin.

Is it possible your health problems are being caused by not drinking enough water? Here are seven signs that indicate you may need to start drinking more water to benefit from improved health.

Headaches

The throbbing pain you feel in your head, that’s your brain telling you “I need water.” Dehydration can lower blood flow and oxygen to your brain, causing inflammation. If you’re feeling discomfort from a headache, try drinking water first. It might be an easier solution rather than taking medication or seeing your doctor.

Fatigue

Not drinking enough water can cause overall fluid loss in the body. This fluid loss can lead to a decrease in blood volume that puts excess pressure on the heart to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the organs, including the muscles. Lack of water can cause you to experience periods of fatigue and low energy as your body tries to function without enough water. If you’re constantly feeling sluggish and tired despite getting a quality night’s sleep, you may need to boost your water intake.

Dry Lips & Skin/Premature Aging

Water hydrates and plumps skin cells to make your skin look brighter, vibrant, and more youthful. However, lack of water can cause skin to lose its plumpness and elasticity—leading to dryness, flakiness, fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Water even helps reduce acne and other skin problems by flushing harmful toxins from the body. If beauty products and skin treatments are failing to improve the appearance of your skin, drink more water to achieve a more youthful appearance and to reduce or improve skin problems.

Watery Eyes

A lack of water intake leads to dry, bloodshot eyes. Without water in the body, your tear ducts dry up. When your body senses that your eyes are not moist enough, it tries to remedy the problem by producing an abundance of tears.

Anxiety

Research has linked dehydration to depression and anxiety because mental health is driven primarily by your brain’s activity. Long story short, dehydration causes brain functioning to slow down and not function properly. It is important to think of water as a nutrient your brain needs.

Dizziness

When our bodies are dehydrated they do not function as well. Water carries hormones and nutrients to their destinations, so when fluid consumption is reduced this procedure starts to slow down causing many bodily dysfunctions. Blood pressure may drop which can lead to dizziness. A faster heartbeat may be experienced as the heart tries to increase low blood pressure.

Weakness/Immunity

When you're dehydrated, your body struggles to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, leaving them fatigued and less powerful. Your immune system, the superhero defending you against nasty bugs, also takes a hit when you're low on H2O. Staying hydrated helps your body flush out toxins, aids in the production of immune cells, and keeps your mucous membranes moist to fight off germs.

So there you have it! Water is needed for every process in the body and not drinking enough can be the cause of some of the above symptoms. So always make sure you are drinking plenty of clean, purified water throughout the day, a good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in oz of water per day, or approximately 8-10 tall glasses.
